Your room

In this exercise you are going to recreate your own bedroom. First you’ll build the room’s walls, window(s) and door(s). When this is done you’re going to dress the room with models from the Google warehouse.

Time: 45 minutes.

Example

The video below gives an example of how to create room with a window and door. This is just an example, your room is most likely a different shape and dimension.

Some additional information

Groups and Components

When you intersect two objects in Sketchup, they become joined. While this is sometimes useful, many times you will want to be able to select different objects that are either overlapping or touching.

To prevent objects from joining, make them into either a group or a component. This stops them from interacting with each other. Groups and components are pretty much the same thing except for one important difference:

If you need a little more in-depth explanation of groups and components, take a look at this video.

Tape Measure tool

Another important tool in your toolbox is the tape measure tool. It can be used to precisely measure a distance or to draw guides. Or even more:

Steps

  1. Draw a floor plan of your room using roughly the correct measurements.
  2. Use the Offset tool to draw an outer wall around your floor plan.
  3. Extrude the walls to the right height.
  4. Do not draw a ceiling, we want a clear top-view.
  5. Draw rectangles on the walls for where doors and windows are. Make sure they are somewhat the right size (use measurements)
  6. Remove these rectangles from the wall with the Extrude tool.
  7. Now head over to File > 3D Warehouse > Get models.
  8. Find models for your bed, your desk, chair, computer, couch, lamp, etc.
  9. Download the models to your computer and place them in the model.
  10. Select View > Shadows to turn on sunlight.
  11. When you are done, choose the perfect camera angle.
  12. Select File > Export > 2D Graphic, set the filetype to JPG and save it.
