Paragraph Styles

InDesign gives you control over the layout of your body text and your headers by using ‘paragraph styles’. These offer you a great deal of control and automation.

Continue from the previous exercise

Steps:

  1. Open your work from the previous exercise.
  2. Now that you have created a layout with some dummy content, place at least 5 headers throughout your text.
  3. Select the first header and style the text.
  4. Select Window > Styles > Paragraph Styles (F11)
  5. Click the Create new style button in the bottom of the palette. This creates a new style called Paragraph Style 1.
  6. Click on it to set the selected text to this style.
  7. Now select your next header and click the Paragraph Style 1.
  8. Repeat this for all remaining headers.
  9. When you are done, double click the Paragraph Style 1.
  10. Rename your style to Header 1.
  11. Take a look at the other options and make some changes (for instance the size or color). Note how all headers are changing.
